Four men have retired, one still works in the Department and one died some time ago. They all enjoyed their work and being part of a big organisation or work group with the same goals. Their stories relate to road-making, but also make links with South Australia's wider history of migration and resettlement. Craig Simcock Photograph courtesy HTSA. Craig Lee Simcock started work with the Highways Department in 1978 as a handyman in the Pavement Marking Division. For twenty–five years he has marked lines on pavements along all the major Highways in South Australia and most of the metropolitan roads. He has travelled all over the State with the crew, first marking the new Highways as they were sealed and then on regular maintenance trips for re-painting. The group worked away from Adelaide for 17 days before returning for a four-day break. They then set off to another area following a regular program.
